If you blog it, they will come

The best way to learn something new is to hang out with people that know a lot about what you’d like to learn. Quite frankly, that is why I’m interning here at RevBuilders.

Blogging is a new trend over the past decade, but I’m guessing that by reading this, you already knew that. What you may not know, is that a young whipper-snapper like myself may not know any more about blogging than you do. So Scot hooked me up with Piedmont Bloggers. It is a group out of Warrenton that meets monthly to talk about blogging. With people from all different stages of life, blogging about different things from personal to professional, the Piedmont Bloggers group is a great way to receive encouragement and wisdom regarding the realm of blogging.

If you have been reading my blog for any amount of time, I’m guessing that you can tell that I’m not yet a professional blogger, nor is it my dream job, but blogging has a big impact on our society today. We care about trending topics. We care about people’s thoughts. We care about stories of success and stories of mishaps. Blogs matter.

I attended the blogging group on Tuesday night and I was not sure what to expect. I entered the room and met Steve Oviatt, Becky O’Brien, and Sherrie Hartzell. I continued to meet a dozen other bloggers before our I grabbed some appetizers and we began our discussion for the evening: blog design.

Hearing everyone’s stories about blogging was encouraging. It was good to hear that I’m not the only one who doesn’t understand all of the lingo of blogging and social networking. Marsha Melkonian and I helped each other navigate through the conversation by offering our individual knowledge. Many people contributed about what makes a blog design successful. Bill Slawski had a great deal to offer on the technical side of blog design.

The main thing that I walked away with, aside from networking connections, was that your blog won’t be perfect today and probably not tomorrow either. Regardless, you have to start somewhere and add to it on a regular basis to make it better. Don’t design your blog today and only add content for the next year. Continue to update your design and add content regularly to keep your audience returning.

Go check out Vineeta Ribeiro’s blog. It will make you smile.
